Muswell Hill is a friendly club offering a wide selection of activities to beginners as well as experts. Our members have a wide range of ages and in strength range from novices to those with gradings about 200. Several of our players are in the 130 strength range. We are one of the few clubs in London who hold a yearly all-play-all chess championship; this offers around 12 clock games against players with a wide range of abilities. We have two teams in the Middlesex League, our first team (at present in Division 1), and our second team (at present in Division 2), both with 8 boards. Each season we hold a Blitz Championship and a Christmas Blitz, a Find the Move competition, and our Club has a chess lending library available to all members. Why not spend an evening with us and play several casual games free of charge? There can be no better way to find out if our club meets your needs. We are one of the oldest London chess clubs, having been in almost continuous existence since the 1880s, first moving to Tetherdown Hall in 1930. We remained there ever since, except for the Second World War.
For a time in the 1980s we took another venue but soon moved back to Tetherdown.
Some strong players have been members: perhaps the best has been Michael Hennigan, who joined us as a boy of 8 and became British Champion in 1993. He is not typical of our present players, however.

Members of Muswell Hill Chess Club have ECF gradings between 58 and 212 (at the time of writing; this varies a little from year to year). To get a grading you will need to play at least five graded games during the season. These are clock games that are sent to the grader and include games played in the club championship, club matches and chess congresses.

We are a 20 minute walk from Highgate or East Finchley tube stations. From Highgate Tube bus 43 or 134 will get you here in 5 minutes. Many of our members come by car and there is local parking available. If you phone us first we will be prepared to greet you when you arrive. See our location on the map provided.
